Searching for the subject

As my photo and editing slump continues, I find myself going back to my previous photos and wondering what it is that makes me feel that spark when I look at them. What I found is that I think I have lost my search for a subject in what I'm shooting. I have fallen into a habit of a quick point-and-shoot of a nice scene, rather than looking for a subject and composing the shot from there.
So I'm calling on you: what are some of your favorite photos that you've really felt proud of the way that you've captured your subject? Did you edit/crop to bring that subject to attention, or did you shoot the subject as is?
As always, thank you all for your insights and inspiration.
